what is temporary employment?

Temporary work means an employee is employed for a specific duration depending on the needs of the company where the temporary employee' s services are offered.  Companies hire temporary employees for many reasons such as they have an extra need but do not have the budget to hire permanently, seasonal/peak season needs, unexpected personnel needs (maternity leave, illness/accident or vacation leave coverage), one off project needs, etc.

There are many benefits to consider with temporary jobs and more and more people tend to use temporary work as their doorway to a permanent job.   You never know, your temporary assignment may lead to a permanent position!  It is also particularly useful for students, recent graduates, people who are just beginning  their careers, and people who want to change jobs.  Temporary employment can benefit almost anyone, especially during a slower economy.

Temporary employment is one way to achieve your goals when it comes to employment, as it is a great way to update your skills, gain valuable work experience, and have a flexible lifestyle.

It is a useful tool for gaining experience in a field that interests you and it is also a good way to get your foot in the door of companies that otherwise would not have hired you.  Temporary jobs widen your chances of interacting with new professionals and thereby developing a wider business network and exposure.

Furthermore if you' ve recently been made redundant, temporary work can provide you with a way to stay in the job market and keep your skills current while you look for a permanent job thereby keeping you engaged which is otherwise impossible in a slow economy.  Of course, it is also a means you also have a source of income, if only for a certain amount of time.

But most importantly temporary work is a way to be active in the job market, when otherwise you would be without work and this is essential in a slower economy.  It is imperative that employees stay in touch with the work environment.

It is also important to point out that temporary positions that are listed on CV' s are just as good as permanent positions within a company when it comes to a potential employer looking for experience.

There are also some very important points that temporary employees should look at for when starting a temporary assignment.  They should always sign a legal employment contract and ensure that they are enrolled in OAED and received all their legal entitlements.
